Here is what you should know about the different types of rescued wood when you’re going green:
Most popular right now is ‘reclaimed wood’; wood that is taken from old barns, warehouses, factories etc., with history and character. Depending on how the wood has aged, reclaimed wood that has never been painted, comes in many shades of brown and sometimes even grey. Old wood once coated in paint (green, red, white), any colour, really, are harder to find, but once found, fun to work with.
Another option is to use wood cut from trees that died naturally – i.e. have you ever heard of ‘wormy maple’? Wormy maple gets its name from the worm-like tunnels created by the ambrosia beetles that infested the tree. The infestation also causes a fungus to form, which gives the wood its beautiful black and grey streaks. ‘Spalted wood’ is the general term referring to wood with unique colouring caused by various types of fungi.
There is also the option of ‘salvaged wood’, referring to wood cut from trees that fell naturally, for example, after a storm. This wood looks just like ‘new’ wood that you would typically buy, but much more environmentally conscious. Salvaged wood is also popular in the use of tables/furniture with ‘live’ edges.
We sell reclaimed wood, but feel free to call with any inquiries.
